Xiaomi Smart Ring may do something no other can - Tech Advisor
Xiaomi’s foray into the smart ring market could be a game-changer, as a newly uncovered patent suggests the company is working on a device with advanced features and an innovative design not seen before.
According to documents filed with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (via Android Headlines), Xiaomi’s smart ring will automatically adjust to the user’s finger size, a solution that addresses one of the most common frustrations when purchasing rings, especially online rather than in-store.

In contrast to other smart rings like the Oura Ring or the Galaxy Ring, which require a size kit to determine the right fit (often adding to the purchase cost), Xiaomi’s self-adjusting mechanism could revolutionise the experience.
The patent describes a spring system integrated into the ring’s inner side, made from elastic materials like PVC or rubber. This feature could ensure that the ring maintains a perfect fit, regardless of finger size or fluctuations due to factors like swelling or weight changes.
This flexibility could let users wear it on any finger and even share it with others, something that’s nearly impossible with traditional fixed-size rings. It could also help get the most accurate sensor readings.
Additionally, the self-adjusting feature might also reduce production costs by eliminating the need for multiple size variants, potentially lowering the product’s price.
Beyond its unique sizing mechanism, Xiaomi’s smart ring patent also reveals a host of advanced features. It will reportedly support various connectivity options, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and even mobile networks ranging from 2G to 5G.
The inclusion of an NFC chip and UWB chip could further extend its potential uses, such as enabling contactless payments or acting as a digital key for smart home devices. These are features missing from most of the big names currently on the market.
Reports suggest that Xiaomi is packing the ring with an array of sensors, including proximity, light, acceleration, gyroscope, magnetic, and temperature sensors, making it a versatile tool for health tracking and more.
This is to be expected but the innovations don’t stop there. The ring could include a touch-sensitive area, a microphone, and a speaker, allowing for voice commands and telecommunication.
However, one of the most intriguing aspects is the integration of air gesture technology, which could enable users to control other Xiaomi devices without physically touching them.

If Xiaomi brings this patented device to the market, it could set a new standard for smart rings, combining cutting-edge technology with everyday convenience.
Of course, not all patents make it to production, but the prospect of such a feature-rich wearable is exciting news for the segment, which might also see the likes of Oppo and Honor joining the fun.
As the smart ring market heats up, Xiaomi’s potential entry could push the boundaries of what these small but mighty devices can do, delivering a product that’s as functional as it is user-friendly.
